Yogis Uncovered | Meet Kat
In this edition of Yogis Uncovered, we sit down with Kat, one of our very first True Naked Yoginis, back for a second time. She reflects on two decades of practice, how dance keeps her mind and body fluid, and why nude yoga feels as natural as a swim. Kat shares simple, grounded wisdom on listening to your body, finding calm in child’s pose, and letting yoga be meditation in motion. Meet Kat in the full interview.
Hi, my name is Kat and I’m from Southern California!
How long have you been doing yoga and how did you discover it?
I’ve been doing yoga for about the last 20 years. I just got into it casually because it goes along with being a dancer and it keeps the body and the mind healthy and flexible and mobile. So it’s very useful [for dancing].
What’s it like doing yoga naked?
It’s very freeing and relaxing. I’d compare it to swimming naked. There’s nothing binding or restricting your body, so it feels nice.
What is your favorite yoga pose?
I think just a regular child’s pose is my favorite. It’s just pure relaxation.
How does yoga help your mental health?
I think yoga is like a meditation in motion, which is definitely important for mental health and self-care.
This is your second time working with True Naked Yoga - how has it been for you?
Oh, everyone’s so professional and caring. It’s a joy to work with True Naked Yoga.
What has yoga taught you?
I think yoga has taught me to listen to your own body and not to try to compete or compare yourself with anyone else. I feel like yoga, even if it’s done in a group situation, it’s all about just being in tune with your own energy and relaxing into your own body and going at your own pace, which I think is really healthy.
Have you always been comfortable with being nude?
Yeah, I’ve always been comfortable with nudity. My parents were nudists, so it was more like a natural thing as opposed to a sexual thing. I think nudity and the female body is beautiful, especially athletes and dancers. They work really hard and they train every day, so I think it’s an art form.
What advice would you give someone who’s not as comfortable with their own naked body?
I would say, take some dance classes where you’re doing kind of sexy choreography, maybe, wearing heels. It really it’s empowering. And then it’ll make you want to maybe try it in your own bedroom without clothes on. The more you feel confident in yourself the more everybody else will feel confident with you.
Do you feel that nudity always has to have a sexual connotation?
I think it could absolutely be natural, it doesn’t have to be sexual at all. Obviously it can be, but there are nudist resorts where people just walk around with their families naked, or go swimming naked. Even [with] implied nudity, I think it’s more about the form of the body as a work of art rather than the sexual.
Do you have a favorite movie or a show that you’ve been watching lately?
My favorite movie is Flashdance. The choreography was so groundbreaking at the time and no one had seen that kind of [dancing with] sexy heels and water. It was edgy and cool and fun and artistic. I think every girl who was in the stripper or burlesque world dreamed of having their moment in the spotlight and being a real dancer. That’s what it was for me.
What is a motto that you live by?
“Don’t think so much, just do it.” I think the hardest part when you’re trying to achieve something is just getting started. And once you start, you can do it if you really believe in it. My other [favorite motto] is honestly just treat other people how you would want to be treated.
