5 Ways to Celebrate National Nude Day

July 14th is National Nude Day, and while it may seem like one of those silly, meaningless holidays that often circulate the internet, it’s actually a special day for people who partake in the practice of Naturism. The holiday is a celebration of the joy and freedom that many people experience from being nude.

Naturism is defined as “a lifestyle of practicing non-sexual social nudity in private and in public”, and is a movement that promotes body-positivity and self-love. One of the main tenets of Naturism is the de-sexualization of nudity and a recognition of nudity as our most natural, normal state. National Nude Day is rumored to have vague origins in New Zealand in the 1970s, but amongst modern Naturists it’s a day that aims to spread the knowledge and positivity about the movement.

…spending more time nude can lead to greater confidence, better self-image, and increased body positivity. It allows you to become more acquainted, comfortable, and accepting of your body exactly as it is.

Unfortunately, nudity remains taboo in most societies, which leads to a great deal of shame surrounding our own bodies. But as many Naked Yoga practitioners can attest to, spending more time nude can lead to greater confidence, better self-image, and increased body positivity. It allows you to become more acquainted, comfortable, and accepting of your body exactly as it is.

You don’t have to be a full-blown Naturist to enjoy National Nude Day, and you certainly don’t have to be naked around strangers if you’re not comfortable with that. Instead, start by trying a few simple, non-threatening ways of becoming more familiar with your naked body before you move on to any social nude activities.

Here are some great ways to Celebrate National Nude Day and become more relaxed with nudity:

1. Naked Yoga (of course!):

Naked Yoga is an exceptionally liberating practice that combines all the benefits of yoga with all the benefits of Naturism. Because yoga encourages you to focus on your breath and the movements, it helps to release feelings of shame, awkwardness, and discomfort with nudity by encouraging you to focus on the present moment.

2. Naked Meditation

Meditation is another way to cultivate mindfulness, and doing it while nude allows you to fully face any feelings of shame or anxiety you might be feeling head-on. It’s important to have a safe space to process these feelings on your journey to releasing them.

3. Cooking Naked

Whipping up your favorite meal while in the nude is a lot of fun, and because cooking is such an innocent and low-key activity, it makes being naked feel a lot less intimidating. Just be careful if you’re working with hot liquids or oils and wear only an apron if needed!

4. Dancing Naked

Dancing naked is so fun and freeing, and while it might feel quite silly, laughing at yourself helps to take the edge off of the nudity. Try blasting your favorite song and getting down in your birthday suit before getting dressed in the morning for a great way to start the day.

5. Sunbathing Naked

If you’re lucky enough to have access to a private area outdoors, try soaking up some rays in your birthday suit for a healthy dose of Vitamin D. The sun will feel so amazing that you’ll almost forget you’re naked! Just make sure to wear sunscreen.
